Plymouth Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC)

Project Description

Client: University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust

Location: Plymouth, Devon

The Community Diagnostics Centre at Colin Campbell Court, Plymouth, is a purpose-built healthcare facility that brings essential diagnostic services closer to the community, improving accessibility and enabling patients to receive care more quickly and closer to home. The centre provides a comprehensive range of outpatient diagnostic services.

The interior was carefully designed to balance the clinical requirements of the facility with a calm, welcoming environment that promotes comfort and wellbeing for both patients and staff. Drawing inspiration from nature, the scheme combines warm, tactile materials with a palette of soft, earthy tones to create a reassuring and restorative atmosphere. Inclusive design principles informed every stage of the project, with particular consideration given to the needs of neurodivergent individuals and people living with dementia through the thoughtful use of colour, contrast, lighting, acoustics, materials and intuitive wayfinding.

Art plays a central role in shaping the patient experience. Large-format photography and bespoke artwork, created in collaboration with local artists through a series of community competitions, are showcased throughout the waiting areas. Each floor features a distinct visual identity that complements the interior palette, enhances orientation and wayfinding, and fosters a meaningful connection to the local community.
